How to build a dome in Minecraft

A dome is the top half of a sphere, which makes it the easiest curved roof to build — you never have to work underneath an overhang.

Hemisphere or custom height?

A hemisphere has a height of exactly half its diameter. It is the shape most people picture, it looks right on almost any round or square building, and its layers are the top half of the matching sphere. Start there.

Changing the height changes the character completely. A dome 30 wide but only 8 tall is a shallow saucer that suits observatories and stadium roofs. The same 30 wide dome at 22 tall becomes a cathedral dome that dominates a skyline. The dome generator lets you set the two independently and shows you the resulting profile before you place a block.

Matching the dome to the building

Measure the interior width of the room the dome will cover, not the exterior. That figure is your diameter. If the walls are two blocks thick, the dome's base ring will sit on the inner edge and the outer edge gives you a natural ledge for a decorative band.

On a square building, a dome whose diameter matches the interior width leaves four small triangular gaps at the corners. Fill them with stairs or a solid block — real architecture calls these pendentives and treats them as a feature.

Building it

  1. Place the base ring on the wall top. Check it against the walls all the way round before going up — every later layer depends on it.
  2. Work upwards one layer at a time. Each ring is slightly smaller, so you can stand on the previous ring and reach inwards.
  3. Near the top the layers shrink fast and the shell leans over your head. Place a temporary pillar in the centre and work around it, or fill the last few layers' interior with a temporary block and stand on it.
  4. Finish the crown last. On odd diameters this is a single block; on even ones it is a 2 x 2 cap. A lantern, a beacon or a glass oculus there is a cheap, effective detail.

Supporting a wide shell

Blocks do not fall in Minecraft, so a dome needs no structural support — but it does need visual support, or it looks like it is floating. Ribs of a contrasting block running from the base up to the crown, spaced evenly around the dome, read as structure and break up a large surface at the same time. Eight or twelve ribs suit most sizes.

Materials that work

  • Copper and its oxidised stages — the classic dome look; use the gradient generator to fade between them.
  • Glass or tinted glass — greenhouses and observatories; the ring shape is very visible, so a clean blueprint matters more here than anywhere.
