How the conversion works
Your image is scaled down to the width you asked for, keeping its proportions. Each remaining pixel is converted into CIELAB — a colour space built so that numeric distance matches how different two colours look — and matched against every block in your palette. The closest block wins. With dithering on, the small error left by each match is passed to the neighbouring pixels using Floyd–Steinberg diffusion, which turns hard bands into a natural-looking blend.
Picking a size you will actually finish
- 16–32 blocks — icons, logos, small signs. An hour or two of building.
- 48–64 blocks — the sweet spot for characters and detailed logos.
- 96–128 blocks — photographs and portraits; expect thousands of blocks and a very large wall.
Building tips
- Build flat on the ground for the first attempt — no scaffolding needed.
- Lay out the bottom row and one side column first as reference lines.
- Work one material at a time using the row instructions, and tick rows off as you go.
- View the finished art from a distance. Pixel art always looks wrong up close and right from far away.
