How the arch curve is worked out
For every row of the opening, the generator calculates how wide the gap should be at that height and keeps the surrounding blocks. A semicircular arch uses a circular rise of half the opening width; a shallow arch uses a quarter; a horseshoe continues past the halfway point so the opening narrows again near the bottom; and a pointed arch uses two circular curves that meet at the apex.
Building an arch without scaffolding problems
- Mark the overall width on the ground — opening plus twice the thickness.
- Build the two straight legs up to where the curve starts.
- Work up both sides at the same time, one row at a time, so any mistake shows immediately.
- Place the keystone (the top centre) last.
- Repeat the whole slice for each block of depth.
Arcades and bridges
Repeating one arch with a pillar between each is what makes aqueducts and cloisters read correctly. Keep the spacing constant — a pillar equal to the arch thickness is a safe rule. For a full crossing, use the bridge arc generator instead, which includes the deck.
