Choosing a roof for your build
- Gable — the default cottage roof. Two slopes, a triangular wall at each end that you can fill with wood or windows.
- Hip — slopes on all four sides. Reads as more expensive architecture and hides the attic completely.
- Pyramid — a hip roof on a square footprint, meeting at a single point. Ideal for towers and gatehouses.
- Shed — a single slope. Perfect for lean-tos, sheds and modern builds.
- A-frame — a very steep gable that reaches the ground; use it for cabins.
Pitch and stair blocks
A pitch of 1 means the roof steps in one block for every block it rises, which is exactly the slope of a stair block — so the roof looks smooth with no half steps. A pitch of 2 steps in two blocks per rise and needs slabs to look right, while 0.5 gives a dramatic steep roof that eats far more material.
Overhang and shadow
One or two blocks of overhang past the wall adds a shadow line that makes a house look finished. It also gives you a place to hang lanterns, and keeps rain particles off the doorway visually.
