How the arch profile is calculated
The arch follows a parabola: at every point along the span the generator works out how high the curve reaches, then keeps the blocks within the arch thickness below that line. Where the curve drops below the deck near the banks, vertical piers fill the gap so the structure carries its own weight visually.
Getting the proportions right
- Rise ≈ span ÷ 5 — a long, elegant crossing suitable for wide rivers.
- Rise ≈ span ÷ 3 — a bolder Roman look, good over ravines.
- Rise > span ÷ 2 — very steep; usually better split into several smaller arches.
Build order
- Mark both banks and the centre of the span.
- Build one full slice of the profile, working up from both banks towards the crown.
- Repeat that slice across the width — every slice is identical.
- Lay the deck flat on top, then add kerbs, lanterns and railings.
