Counting blocks before you dig
Nothing slows a build down like running out of a material halfway up a wall. Working out the total first turns a build into a shopping trip: gather once, build once. The counts here come from the same geometry the generators use, so a circular wall of 21 blocks diameter reports the number of blocks the circle really contains, not an approximation from a formula.

How much spare should you carry?
In creative you need none. In survival, ten percent covers the usual misplacements and the occasional block lost to water or lava. Push it to fifteen percent for anything involving scaffolding at height, terrain work, or a material that is expensive to replace.
Thickness matters more than people expect
Doubling the thickness of a wall doubles the material. A 40 x 12 wall is 480 blocks at one block thick and 960 at two. If a build looks material-hungry, thickness is usually the reason — a single-thickness shell with an inner detail layer only where it shows is a common way to halve the cost.
